WHO: Clarissa Bellandi, Laura Casali, Mattia Minotti, Simone Pasquali, Marco Pellegrini, Jenny Sarasso, with Mike Snyder, teacher.
WHAT: an exhibition of work by the students on the Comics in English evening class
organized by the Proloco Induno Olona, and taught by Mike Snyder, illustrator, comic book artist, painter, and portrait artist, as part of the second annual programme of vocational courses, coordinated by Paola Redaelli on behalf of the ProLoco of Induno Olona, near Varese, Italy.
WHY: “We wanted to show what the class was doing. There’s been a lot of interest, and we know that people were wondering how it worked and what the students did. The course, which consists of ten 90-minute weekly lessons, consists of revising all aspects of how you draw a comic. This includes anatomy and perspective, some aspects of which the students may well have covered at school, or elsewhere. We then move on crafting a story, from characters, through plot, to execution. And this is part of what we will be seeing at the show, ” says Mike Snyder, their teacher, an American artist who is a long-term resident in Italy.
HOW: each of the six students will exhibit their work, whether it was created as part of the course or whether it predated the course. Mike explains, “The students are aged between 11 and 40. Clearly the youngest are at school, which the eldest have been out in the world for some time. In the former case, they signed up to explore the world of drawing comics from first principles. In the latter, these are people who have been working on their own, in some cases, for several years, and signed up to Comics in English as a way of having some feedback, and of getting some professional input for the very first time. In this case, what is exhibited is clearly not what has been produced since last October, but is the fruit of a long period of work.”
The students’ work will be complemented by an exhibit of Mike Snyder’s own work. One recent project has been a biography of Jim Morrison, of The Doors. Starting out as a graphic novel, the drawings have since been adapted for use as a video-backdrop to a tribute concert to the Lizard King, the next outing of which will be at La Birraria, Mendrisio, Canton Ticino Switzerland, on Friday, 1 March 2013.
